About This Quote

The roots of shame run deep. The roots of shame are the memories of our past mistakes. They are the things we have done that hurt us deeply. Those are the things that make our skin crawl.

The things that cause us to question who we are and what we are worth. The roots of shame are not always visible, they can also be buried deep underneath the surface of our skin. Sometimes, though, they pop up in an unexpected way.

For example, when I was in college, I walked into my house to find my roommate lying on my bed crying with her head in her hands. I asked what was wrong and she replied, “I just got caught cheating on a test…again!” Without even thinking about it, my first instinct was to get mad and yell at her for hurting me like this for no reason. But instead I decided to show her how much she meant to me and how much I cared about her by simply taking her in my arms and letting her cry it out.

That was the moment I realized how deep shame could run and how hard it was to get over.
